distance from rear of car?

i was wondering if it's important to keep the firing end of a ported box a certain distance from the rear of the car in my stationwagon?

I noticed the other day my subs were sounding like crap, and looked, and saw the box has shuffled it's way to where there was only about 1" between the box and the rear of the car.

Is there a minimum distance between the rear of the car and the box that should be kept in mind?

Thanks.

Minimum distance is the distance at which it sounds best to you:)
