im thinking about buying my freinds dirtbike, its a 300 cc ktm 2 stroke. it doesnt run, but i know that its because its not getting spark.

my questions are:

how hard is it going to be to learn to ride a dirt bike on a 2 stroke, is it a bad idea?

also, what could be the cause of it not getting spark, im guessing its the coil, but what else?

it also hasnt been ran in a while, not really sure how long, but should the bearings be fine if they werent damaged before it stopped working?

i raced for 8 yrs and two stroke and 4 strokes are the same except 2 strokes have alot more zip and tend to get the holeshot in a race but as far as learning how to ride there isnt that much difference other than the 2 stroke will be a little faster but with that much power in a bike speed will be the least of you worries lol but as far as it not getting spark its most likely that coil but if you can get it 4 cheap id go for it and the bearings will be ok

I would think for a begginer bike, I wouldn't start you out on something with that much go power. Maybe start on a 125. I started on a 4 stroke honda xr100. Then to a cr250. And what a difference it was. Difference was night and day. But whatever you do always have fun.

aren't KTM's known for top speed?
no... its all in the gearing... ktm has more enduro bikes which are geared higher so they go faster so that could be why you heard that, but in comparable bikes of a different make, ktms dont have a faster top speed (i.e. ktm 250sx vs yz250)

new coil shouldnt be too much. KTm 300's are great woods bikes and are reliable. Make sure you do a compression test before you buy it. YOu can get a compression tester for like 20 bucks at a autoparts store. It should have atleast 150 psi. Also check the bearings for play. put the bike on a stand so both tires are in teh air and try to push the handlebars forward and backwards... there shouldnt be any play. Also try moving the wheels and swingarm side to side... there shouldnt be any play at all, if there is the bearings are shot.

Speaking of motocross im going to motocross des nations at budds creek next weekend

yea thats alot of bike for a begginer learning to ride but you should be able to handle it just take it slow and get some protective gear cuz i lost a good friend cuz he just rode one time without a chest protector
