Getting back into it!
Looking to buy a digital camera within the next few days.

Been doing research on many Canon's. Trying to keep the budget under $250.

Anybody know much about the Canon S1 IS 3.2MP Digicam w/ 10x Zoom or Canon SD300 4MP Digicam?

I read reviews on CNET and did some other research but want to hear from users on here.

Any other cameras suggested?

Thanks!

-Matt

The only thing I didn't like about the SD300 was the lack of manual control it gave you - I personally like to take photos by adjusting the apeture and letting the camera calculate the appropriate shutter speed. The smaller Canons didn't come with an auto exposure lock feature to allow me to do that. I ended up buying an A95, which serves me well when I don't want to play around with the "real" camera //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Yeah,

I'm stuck halfway between. I know the better camera is the PowerShot IS (when it comes down to specs), but I wonder if sacrificing some of those features for the 300's mobility and easiness is worth it.

Hmpf.

optics for....what. digital? most defineitly. however, a leica medium format cann't be touched.
1. Of course this was talking about digital cameras...does the title say otherwise? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

2. Leica doesn't make medium format gear...at least if it's out there, I've never heard of it or a photographer using it.

The absolute best out there is probably Zeiss (like the 50mm Planar I've got on the Contax RTS II) but unless you get a used Contax N DSLR (which sucked big time on the ergonomics) or a digital back for the Contax 645 medium format rig (16MP, but close to $10K when finished) you're not going to get Zeiss lenses for digital.

contax 4 teh lose //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif and my local photo shop has this nice leica medium format (at least they tell me this, and the results are STUNNING).

Elan 7? Bah.

The Nikon F4S is probably the best 35mm SLR ever made...use one and you'll know //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif I might trade the RTS for an F4 in the coming months. The only thing I don't like giving up is manual film advance, which I like for some strange reason. An all-manual camera just feels really intuitive.

If I had the money, I'd ditch 35mm and go 4"x5" large format //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif But alas, $3 an exposure would own me...

truly spoken

I've got a Sony CDM400 and absolutely love the camera. Of course I've added a few things like a nice hotshoe, Canon wide angle + 1.8-4x zoom. I probably spent about $1500 on the setup for a decent Zeiss lens camera. The thing I want though is a good SLR Canon Rebel Digital. All of my attachments I got for the Sony will work with the Rebel as well. The only thing I require in a camera is the ability to have full manual control.

//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif on the Rebel...definitely not a good choice.

The D50 or D70S is a much better option for the sub-$1000 DSLR...
