different amp for my subs?

i have an MA AUDIO HK-1398 powering a pair of 12" MA AUDIO XL's. subs are dual 4 ohm DVC rated at 600w/1200w and the amp is running at 700w RMS x 2 @ 2 ohm and it is class a/b power.

now occasionally this thing goes into protect when it seems to be hitting lots of really deep notes. sometimes like tonight it does it when its not hot at all. i have the bass boost on the amp is maxed at 18 dB, the gain is a little over half, the bass on my h/u is 2 of 6, my h/u volume is at 15 of 31, and my x over gain is a little over half. doesnt seem like im overdoing anything except maybe the amp bass boost? tomorrow im going to turn that down a bit and give it a few days to see if it keeps going into protect. if it does, am i just better off getting a class D amp? also, will cutting that bass boost lessen the really deep notes and allow me to turn up the bass from the h/u and get a better rock sound from the subs?

i have a compact truck with the box barely fitting behind my seats. i have the amp mounted on top of the box about 1/2" up, so it should be getting decent ventilation?

Couple problems I see....for one NO BASS BOOST. Set your HU sub out to max and use the gain setting tutorial sticky at the top of the amp forum (dont have a DMM? GET ONE its only 20 bucks).

Number two, looks like half an inch may not be enough ventilation for that amp...try mounting it somewhere else. Set your gains first though and see if that works...

The rock sound is subjective....you would be better of getting better SQ subs with a flatter response in a sealed enclosure for double kicks, or soft drums....You can also EQ the subs, but might be more trouble then its worth, what kind of box are they in?

i dont have a sub out on the h/u, mainly the reason i got the 2 way pwrd x over. i turned the bass boost down to like half and turned up the gain on the sub amp and lpf x over chan. gonna give it a day or so like that and ill just go from there.

after much asking around on the MA forum (which i cant get to anymore) i was told that XL's were MA's best SQ subs (i got em last year), and ive got them in a sealed box, 1.25 cu/ft per. MA web site recommends 1 cu/ft per, but once again upon asking i was told 1.25 gave the best results for rock. had some guy build the box of 3/4" MDF.

it seems that turning down the amp bass boost mainly affects the lower freqs. maybe the faster double bass wont get so muddy now, and maybe playing NIN wont make m amp shut off all the time.
