Did My Amp go Bad

I was wondering how I check if my amp went bad? It keeps goin protection mode. One time it will be hitting, then sometimes it wont, sometimes I'll play it loud and it'll do fine, then sometimes it cuts off then when I turn it down it stays on. It jus basically stays on sometimes and cuts on and off others. Does anyone know the problem? They said my amp went bad, but I think they just want me to buy an amp from them. Any help would be great.

disconnect whatever the amp is powering and turn it up and such and see if it goes into protection...i so take a meter and test to make sure you are still getting power at and that your ground is still in tact...if all is well check your fuse under the hood and make sure it is not partially blown. if all that is ok then your amp is done for
