Did i screw up?

I think the cutout should always be cut before gluing/screwing one the front piece. just in case you mess up on the cutout you can just use another piece.

 
^^ sure you can. you if its a plunge router you set the depth just a hair less than the thickness of your wood.and then just knock it out. it done right it wont "break away" the mdf
