Dell has great Price vs. Quality.
I myself am looking to get an E1505 but I am contemplating whether I want it now with the current coupons or wait a little more til a good deal comes around.
You really don't need Core 2 Duo, unless you really need the 64-bit processor. Other than that, you'll notice minimal, if any, improvements over the Core Duo processor.
Sony is way overpriced with their Vaio's. Your mostly paying for their name when you go with them as you'd probably save $500+ with same configurations, Sony vs. Dell. They might have a slightly better build quality but their price definetly doesn't justify it.
The two main manufacturers I would look at is Dell and HP.
