Defective Sony CD unit?

Let me first off state that I know very little about car audio, and don't have a lot of bucks to invest in a system. I just want a working CD player. I just (this week) purchased a vehicle that has a Sony CDX C4750 am/fm/cd player. This one has the detachable faceplate, and 10 station preset buttons along the bottom front. The problem is that once a cd is inserted, it will not eject. It plays fine, but the only way too get it out is to push the reset button that is behind the faceplate. Also only the first 2 preset buttons actually function, regardless of mode. I have downloaded the manual from the Sony site, followed the suggested troubleshooting fixes, but still not much success. Strangely enough, while tinkering with the unit trying to get it working today, it did indeed work correctly for a while. The preset buttons were functioning like they are supposed to, but before I could see if the cd would eject it reverted back to its messed up state. My question is this, would replacing the faceplate with a new one correct the problems? I can get a new one from Sony for $120. Or should I just buy another in dash unit somewhere and have that installed? Again, I am not looking for some kind of high end system, just a basic cd player that will work. Are problems like mine usually the fault of a defective faceplate or the units internal components? Guys, I don't dispute that there may be better decks available for about the same money, or that newer models may be better. But I know zero about installation, and swapping out a new faceplate for a bad one (do they ever go bad?) would take me 30 seconds. What is required to install a new indash unit? Just unplug the wires and slide a new unit in the old mount? Don't you need a key to unlock the unit from its mount? I don't have it for the Sony, is it a generic key that any new unit will have?
