Dedicated midbass

OK, I am ready to run dedicated midbass. I wanted to use my 9835 in 3 way mode to accomplish this by putting my comps on the high side XO and the midbasses in the mid range XO then sub on the low XO of Course. However I noticed on the high XO I can only go as low as 1KHZ. This means I need to rum my midbass near 1khz. Isn't this too high to play a midbass to? If anyone else has used thier 9835 in this manner please give me some recomendation.

of course I have full control of slope, so I can run a 6db cut off @ 1khz on the high side and a steep 24db around 500 for low pass on midbass and use the EQ to boost any gaps.

Would this be what I need to do?

What range do people generally run their dedicated midbass in?

Actually it seems the best option will be to keep the 9835 in 2 way mode and use a combination of it's XO and my amps XO. Not what I was hoping for, since I wanted all processing controlled from head unit, but it will get it done. After searching it seems most run there midbass only to 350hz.

Running dedicated midbass to 1khz is way too high. There are a few true 7-8" midbass drivers that *can* play to 1khz, but most dont like it and wouldn't perform well. Even the old IDQ8's that were so famous for being able to run with horns 2-way (8's would run up to 1-1.2khz) didn't really do *great* at it.

Not to mention you will lose alot of that clarity/emphasis on the true midbass region due to your midbass drivers being expected to play some midrange as well. You could run something smaller like xxx6.5's or Extremis to 1khz, but I still wouldn't. If you cannot set up a 3-way's xover system correctly, alot of the advantages of a true 3-way are not realized.

Generally speaking, when you go to a 3-way configuration, your toss your old comp-set passives in the garbage.

I have a PPI DCX730 DSP I picked up, thinking of using it in conjuction with my Alpine 9835.

Using the subout on my 9835 so I still have complete control on the HU itself, and then running the remain 4channels of RCA's to the DCX730 to run my three way front stage...

I was thinking about what I have at my disposal. A pair of XXX6.5's for dedicated midbass, pair of AA Poly's for Midrange, and a pair of Vifa XT25's for highs.

How exactly were you going to do it with what you have?

I wanted to go pseudo active not full. I still want to use my comps with their passives (Rainbow SLC65) in kicks. Then I was going to put 6.5 dedicated midbass in the doors. I haven't settled on a midbass driver yet. I just wanted to make sure I had the proper amount of processing first. My amp is the 5 channel 25 to life Power1000. It has low or high pass(12db butterworth or 24db linkwitz slopes). I am just unsure of how to get this properly done.

My final thoughts for today was keeping the 9835 in 2 way with it set to high pass and low pass @ 60hz. Then on my amp set the channels for the midbass at a low pass around 300 hz, then the comp channels at high pass 300hz or where ever they blend in better. This would give my sub 60hz and below, midbass 60-300 and my comps 300 and up. I just don't know if this would be good.

I have never added a dedicated midbass before. Just sub and comps in the past.

I don't have enough channels to do full active sub, midbass, mid and tweet.

Perhaps I should look into adding another small 2-channel amp for the tweets and go full active.

I just dunno //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

I say try it, and see how you like the sound.

Make sure to properly deaden your doors, like in the sticky in the speaker forum... or you may not get the results you want.

Anyways, I follow your thinking... and it would work correctly.

I'll give it a shot then. Now comes the hard part of s\choosing which .5 midbass to try out.
