decreasing port size change sound?

I have a 4 cubic foot box tuned to 32, i was gonna change my system and build another box (i have much experience) tuned to 27 but i would like to save the money and keep this one.

I have taken crapy ported boxed and simply decreased the port area by puting planks of wood along the inside of the port, thus decreasing the tuned frequency.

But what i want to know is will plainly decreasing the port area effect its efficiency? Cause response peaks? Change the response in any way besides a greater chance of chuffing?

I use the box simulator called "unibox" but it does not seam to show ny change in response.

So how does efficiency change with port area? Is it just a db or two? Or would it be a large increase when port area is adjusted to say 1.5x the original?
