im broke....
I just bought a used jetta two days ago. The dealer told me the headunit was out no biggie i have my alpine i was planning on putting in anyways. I get is wired up and put in and whola... wrong still no sound at all. There is a tweeter in each door and a mid/low per door as well. Its a 2000 vr6 if that matters. I have checked with a voltmeter before and after the harnesses and am still getting power. I checked at the speakers and get nothing not one little bit. Im wondering if anyone can tell me where i might find the short? I really hate the idea of rewiring the whole setup based on the fact that it is so small and compact I already have the entire lower portion of the dash stripped down and have found the wires but its such a tight squeeze i cant see much its all just being felt out by hand. Any ideas please help i love this car but HATE having no sound at all....

already thought of that my gf has a newer (nicer) jetta which has the monsoon system that is amp powered it mounts in the trunk. I have checked to see if there was an amp there nothing.... I did notice though that it looked like something had been ripped out of the holes that should have held the bracket for the amp and two huge connnectors dangling close by in the trunk. Could it be possible that some dumbass douche bag stole a factory VW amp? The speakers are still stock so i cant imgiane having an upgraded amp..... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

Two dangling connectors mean there was a factory amp. The input is now completely disconnected from the output. Your problem now is that the factory amp may have had separate outputs for the woofers and tweeters, and the crossover was probably built into the amp. That means you won't easily be able to run all eight speakers from the new head unit; at the very least you'll need some passive crossovers for the tweeters.
