Ok so it seems like there is 2 classes an average guy like myself with 1 15" and 2k watts could compete in.

Street stock (1000 and 2000 watt limit)

street (unlimited power?)

If I have my 15" dc xl, thats considered a competition sub so that kicks me out of street stock.

In street class, there is no power limit correct? I mean the record is like 158 db's but I just dont get how anyone could be competitive when most guys are prolly gonna have like 5k watts+.

I am building my first SPL setup with 1 15" dc xl and around 2-3k watts, Is there anything I should know about being able to compete with the serious competitors or do i need to find some meca or other orgs shows? thanks guys

Reppin Minnesota eh? You go to the Sound Connection meets?

upping 3k to 5k power isn't as much db as you'd think. It's all in the box, build a bunch of boxes and you'll find it's all in the install

I see this said all the time. I'm no master craftsman but I've made a few boxes in my day. Whenever I search to find these secret box building techniques all I find is stupid "skillsaw+MDF+glue=great bawks" instead of real tips on how to get those extra deebees out of a box.

Do you have any reference guide book bible or does anyone have a real guide to squeezing out the lame of these boxes? or is it just extra hype?

i believe the record was 183 db's or so set by some dude in a ford f250...could be wrong tho that was awhile ago

Too many variables, tons of sub and port directions to fire. You really need to find which combo yeilds the biggest gain in your vehicle, then find your peak reasonant freq for your car and get your enclosure to peak at the same hz, than adjust the box in size and port are till you cant gain any more deebeez. After all that testing and tuning you should be pretty competitive.

It's different in different vehicles because of cabin gain and other factors like trunk size and stuff.... it's all trial and error they're are no tips really, kerfed ported boxes, fourth order bandpass, and even some T line boxes can get nasty.

Ok with my 15" and 2k even I build a box that puts up a great number like 150 db what class could I win at a db drag meet? Maybe its just world finals im looking at and local wont be as tough?

And im just getting into competeing I am going to start going to shows asap!

My local place 1 12 highest is 148 db(****)

1 15 class highest was like 143(lol?)

and 1 class higher then that was even lower (wtf)

and the class above that was 155+ LOL.

It varies who you go with, average joes aren't the guys with 150 db subs you'd place high with a 150

Local competitions aren't usually that tough, although that varies a lot by region. With a good box and some testing you could be competitive locally I'm sure. National level is a different story, most of the people in street classes that are putting up big numbers are using CRX's (or Yugo's or Pandas) and have spent way too much on equipment.

Never underestimate time spent testing on the meter. Little tricks that gain a tenth here and there add up when you find a bunch of them. Understanding your vehicle is very important to being competitive, sometimes moving your box an inch or two can gain an entire db! Just remember to only change one thing at a time so that you can be sure what the gain or loss is attributed to.

Hmm, But i couldnt go to world finals with 150 db even if I got it at 1500 watts? I just think there should be a class like this, IDK maybe i should look into findin some meca comps, but I dont know if there is any in my area st.paul...

World finals are WORLDWIDE, even MIDWEST(which is this weekend btw) is hard as **** to go. My buddy with 1 btl 12 hits a 148.3 below 2k watts off his sundown 3k. Ya, he's going but he's invested ALOT of time on his box
