Dash smoke plz help

So I was wiring in my 3k sundown amp when my dash started smoking I ripped the batter terminals off and saved my taco but now in stuck with a smelly truck and probly melted wires. I had my dash apart and didint see anything bad/exposed what did I do wrong

I'm a newbie but I know my **** that's why in so confused

Without seeing the install that is very hard to diagnose why your dash would be smoking. If your power wire running through the dash? Is it fused?

My guess is a short. The fuse is a 250amp on 2 gauge wire the wire dose run threw my firewall but it's close to the flore bord more then the dash

Time to start tracing some wiring down man. Might as well remove that HU and bench test it to start with. Remove the fuse at the battery for the amp supply on the safe side and prob the supply fuse for the HU even

I'll look. Remote was not plugged into amp at the time tho

Thank you. I'm positive the head unit still works cuz it did and all 4 speakers worked after the smoke incident

I'm assuming it's a short somewhere

I doubt it is OEM wiring. All wiring back there is protected with a fuse. Only if you used too big of a fuse for X reason, then I think it would be a component.

Yeah but if it's not OEM wires then what is it its the most base model 1999 tacoma. There's not much under the dash and my next question is what if it fried something that the wire is going into

Where my main harness is under my steering colum smelled like burnt plastic
