My son has put together a car stereo system in his car (aka my car he drives) and is constantly got the blasted thing torn apart for some reason. I just want the inside door and dash panels to remain in their proper place not sitting on the garage floor. The latest issue is he has an MTX I think 450 watt mulitchannel amp with infinity kappa 50.3cs 5-1/4 door speakers with tweeter and crossover. Not long after he puts in he tells me he smoked something and speakers quit working. I found crossover cracked resistor and blew the cap so I replaced the components with identical ones. Also found that the tweeter wasn't working so he put the stock car tweeter in with the rebuilt crossover and worked fine for a month. Now the same crossover blew again and this time really got hot and blew diffferent cap and resistor than the ones i replaced and even the coil got extremely hot. Does anyone know why this is happening????? Is it him turning up too loud or amp, speakers, ???? It isn't blowing the left side set just the right... Any help would be appreciated.

it sounds like the amp is too powerful for the components.... i'm not sure if the kappa components can take 250 watts each....

i got a suggestion.... get a new set of components, or a new amp.

Wow uhhh LOL...back to your questions

If either of you do not know what your are doing exactly then I recommend you go to your local audio shop. I really hope he didn't bridge the 4 channel amp to run those components because they can't take that amount of power. Even if he is not, be sure the gain on the amp is set properly. Make sure your stuff is not getting wet either. Your post is kind of hard to understand...Are you talking about a capacitator? If so I would get rid of that as well.

Appreciate the help. I picked out the ideas that I think have potential.

1. [too powerful], will investigate. He isn't pumping the entire amp to those 5-1/4s, he also has 2 infinity 6x9's in rear but do need to check into amp output X4 as compared to speakers (85WRMS).

2. [Dont bridge] need to investigate, I assume bridging is joining 1 channel with another for a single output of greater power and since he has 4 speakers I suspect not bridged.

3. [Moisture] This is a definite possiblility need to check.

4. [Gain on Amp] Another possiblility, I know he played with the POTS (Potentiometers)

5. [New Amp & Components] Good idea, won't fix moisture or wiring issue (shorts/grounds)

6. [Get a job and buy his own car] Has job, in shool and he will fix my teeth for free when becomes dentist.

My own ideas from converstations to check, Get out the old Fluke VOM and see if DC voltage coming out of that channel. I will compare to other channels to see if the abnormal.

Power or bridging is definately not an issue if he is using all of the amps channels. Don't buy anything else until you have figured out what the problem is. Definately check the gains and water exposure and get back to us.
