custom built pc crapping out, so..

you tech ****s rate this rig i wanna build...

i'm keeping my current external drive, sound card, and some other things, but here's what i'm looking at building slowly:

motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128064

processor:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115017

memory:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148070

hdd:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136131

vid card:

by the time i get to the video card i MIGHT wait for the 9xxx series from nvidia, if it's not out then i'll probably go with an 8800GTS or something similar..

total est cost:

$900-1100

not bad for a high-performance gaming system... i could go to best buy and spend MORE money and get LESS performance and quality... given this is minus cooling (fans, possibly liquid cooling, possibly a cooling system for the video card, possible new case, MAYBE some internal dvd-rws and what not, but thats all irrelevent and isnt req)

anyone got any suggestions? have any experience with quad-cores?

I wouldn't get that 1066 memory unless you plan on overclocking your quad, but even then the fsb is still only 1066, so 800mhz would probably suit you fine. Would probably save you $50 or so. I have the 8800gts 640mb, and that is way overkill unless you will truly be using your computer for gaming. But it looks good, I want to get one of those quads, but I'm waiting for the true quads from Intel to come out.

Powersupply? Oh and if you do end up getting that quad, better get some decent cooling. I hear they can run pretty hot, even at stock settings.

I would wait until sometime in january when the new penryn cpu's come out.

Faster, Cooler, And comsume less power.

But you also might be able to score a q6600 cheap(er) when they do.

Other than that your choices seem pretty good.

Maybe a 8800GT for the video card since they are pretty cheap and still pwn.

A plain 8800GT for $250ish wipes the floor with my $300 8800GTS 320mb. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Whatever you do, Do not cheap out and use a crappy power supply.

You have some nice components spec'd and it would be a shame to have a crappy p.s. take something out with it when it dies.

hmm. i'm going to look into those penryn's.. dunno if they will be compatible with the board i have though...

and yes i know alllll about ps's unfortunately. ive had many a video card die on me due to crappy power supplies. antec was my choice for awhile when i was a noob, i then purchased a silenX which did me good for awhile, but yeh ppl underestimate the importance of a quality PS. crappy PS = possibility of losing multiple parts of your computer, if not the entire computer.

but thanks for the heads up on that cpu.. imma take a look at that.

omg why is everyone wanting an intel.
AMD is so much better.

and your probably better off getting a seagate hardrive. western digitals sound like turbine engines.
actually, i've owned both intel and amd.

intel > amd in my experience.

and i currently have a seagate. this is all a toss up nothings in stone... just curious on if the chosen equip above are good choices to start with

Supports Intel® Core™ 2 multi-core and upcoming 45nm processors
Supposedly they will work in that board.

You might want to talk to them to confirm that before purchasing anything though.

Although Intel gave Nvidia chipset owners the shaft.

My eVGA 680i SLI was supposed to work with all penryn cpu's.

Now that Intel changed something in the architecture the 45nm quads don't work with the 680i chipset.

But the 45nm Dual's still do.

I suppose anything is an upgrade from my current 3.2 pentium D //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif
