The focus for this project is to examine the relationship, if any, between gender and the stigmatization of alcoholics. Specifically, will there be any statistically significant differences in how males and females report the general public feels toward someone labeled as an alcoholic? The perceived stigma of being labeled an alcoholic can be a significant barrier to treatment. Understanding how specific subsets of the population contribute to the overall stigma society projects towards those labeled as might be useful in developing programs to combat the stigmatization of alcoholics. Knowing what groups to target with anti-stigma efforts could considerably increase the effectiveness of these efforts and might lead to an increase in willingness to participate in treatment programs by alcoholics.
