i like laptop keyboards better for some reason. Or those HP desktop keyboards that feel like laptop keyboards
I loved my IBM laptop keyboard.

The laptop died after a while. I took it everywhere.

So, now it's my slave computer's keyboard.

It was a bitch to wire, though. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

TOTALLY worth it.

let me know. depending on if you need a legit copy of ms office or not i can probably get that for you as well.
now i do have another one thats an Acer Extensa model that is a 2.0gb dual core processor and 3 gigs of ram for the same price. the one i have listed might be sold already.

dont you know we are scared.
Can you PM me all the specs on that extensa. I may know someone interested in it.

Thanks.

Is there a ranking somewhere on what processors are best?
Is Intel better than AMD?

So intel has this celeron and people bash it. What processor should I look for?
I used to be AMD all the way, but like what Intel offers better now. They are more efficient. All in all, any of the mwill do what you plan to do with it and offer no real noticeable improvement over the other.

I would recommend staying away from Intels Celeron or AMDs lower series chips as well.

They have castrated cache. That can make more performance difference than the speed or brand of the chip.

lawler, the Pickup artist is on VH1 -- first time I have seen this -- these guys, oh boi.
you learn stuff?

thats too much work, id just get a flat keyboard.

That's what your dates say too.
heh, they end up goin to get RND

I see why you are sticking with low cache chip based laptops though. A bit of price difference. I personally wouldn't settle. Cache makes a difference in everything. It is one of the most underrated specs thanks to marketing.

What does cache mean/do? I understand more = better. But when?
You play games, so cache may be more valueable. I am trying to understand under what situations it really matters. Do programs I intend using require high cache?

To find a laptop with that level of cache you reccomend, would that put me well beyond my $500 budget?
Cache is beneficial to all flip, not just gamers. In fact I would say it is less relevant in gaming.

Cache is memory that is on die (in the CPU itself). It runs at the same speed as the chip so it is instant access, no latency. The CPU keeps the most used instruction sets in this area.

The reason i say it could be more beneficial to real world users than gaming is due to gaming being a singular thing. Most gamers will shut everything they can down to squeeze optimum performance from this single application. So this large cache may not be utilized as much as multitasking in a work environment where many apps could be running simultaneously.

Obviously more cache = more the CPU can keep in it's own instant access memory.

BTW, I used to game. I no longer game. If I did I'd have more than an ATI 9600 lol. I am more into multimedia, archiving, storage, networking.

I see.
What else should I look for?
I honestly wouldn't accept anything but a Core Duo setup for a laptop. They are less power hungry so will generally have better battery life. They have large amounts of cache. To me laptops are all about mobility. Battery life, weight, ergonomics are key. Unfortunately for the last spec, you can only determine by playing with them in the store.

Yes they come with a heftier price tag. Honestly though it is hard to say, because maybe those cheap ones have the life you need and your apps won't need the extra cache.

It is so hard to tell which is why I overshoot things by a small margin. It is better to go a little further than necessary then to fall short imo.

Now going for echelons are just stupid wastes of money and only for those who need to brag. You hit diminishing returns by buying the top shelf of all, but you also get less bang for buck buying bottom barrel often times.

IMO it's like with your home sub. You could technically skimp and save even more money, or you could spend a bit more and get true bang for buck and be happy with the decision. Low clock speed core2 duos are where the best bang for buck is in a laptop imho.

Well, the choice not to skimp worked out pretty well with the home sub...that I just recalled, I still haven't taken pics.
Even though it ended up costing nearly $400, I am not sure if I could have got the sound I wanted for $500.

I decided getting this computer is a little more important than the TV...which stinks because I really wanted one.
Well see that decision I can't help you with. I understand one or the other and I personally wouldn't skimp on one or both just to be able to do both. I always try to maximize my dollar on purchases like that by getting the best bang for buck. Like i said diminishing returns come from both ends of the spectrum on these purchases. You could always save more, but is it worth it too?

The laptop is probably much more important than a TV at this time for you, so I could see that. You have school and work that require it's use unlike the TV. The TV would obviously be a more entertaining choice to do first but the laptop is far more logical and practical.

With that being said, I'd buy a new TV //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

lol....
Diminishing returns on the front end? I can see it in practice, but not "in theory"....if that makes sense. I will have to ponder on this for a bit, but I definitely see where you are coming from.
Diminishing returns on the front end for computers is more common than other things you may apply it to.

Performance on future apps(biggest risk)

Hardware upgrade limitations

Compatible with new OSes

Greatly slower than something a few ticks above it

Ownership regret

Take for instance the one you showed me today for like 469 I think it was.

It uses an Athlon X2 chip. It is based on AMDs K8 platform that has been in existence on the market for over 5 years now.

Intels Core 2 duo is developed on a platform only a little over 2 years old.

By that time line it is easy to assume that the Core2 duo is more primed for longevity.

of course that isn't an absolute, so thats why i would use the term assume.
