It's like anything else. How much is the modem outright versus paying 3 per month. If its only 30, you save money after 10 months..assuming you keep the service that long. Also do you hear a lot of stories of peoples modems getting fried from lightning? Its a pretty common occurence here in FL, but maybe not so much where you are. I would rent the modem here just for that purpose. If it were not, and the modem was fairly cheap, I would probably buy it outright.

Well, it seems like they are in the $50-$60 range. If they do not renew at $20/mo, then I am done and comcast has to pick up their modem. I think I will do this.

they will probably expect you to bring it in if not they will charge you full price for it.

PCI Ethernet card.

Well, PCI is the slot it plugs into. There might be other Ethernet Cards.

But, the most common is the PCI one.

Network card. 3com makes some nice ones, the intel ones aren't bad either. PCI is the type you probably want to look for, unless this is going into a laptop.

I don't have a laptop. I have this old desktop with Windows 2000 on it.
I may try to get Iam to help me build a nicer one in the future. I gave up on the home movie thing, realizing how few movies I actually watch.

is he local or is he the only person you feel comfortable helping you out w/ this?

Truth be told, you can probably find a decent used one for crazy cheap that will fit your needs....unless you're looking for cutting edge stuff I see little point in building one anymore.

I was just thinking that. For my PC, I use one I found in a box deep back in my closet that was made in '01. Literally. It works fine. Big $$ doesn't always = necessary.

Well, it doesn't have to be cutting edge. Just power MS office. I don't know the requirements though.
I'd like to have a laptop, but my hand always hits the little mousepad thing when I type. I would hope I can turn that off and use a real mouse.

There are hp/dells out there that will do this with ease fo +/- $300. I'll see if I still have a link.

I'm afraid I didn't read the post. I just assumed you were getting new internet and you needed a card. You building a new PC?

But, you can turn it off and use a real mouse. Also, on a few laptops, it turns off when it senses that you're typing. There's also some where you can press a button and it turns the mouse off.
