it's where the next song starts to fade in while the song just played fades out.

it sounds good to not have that pause between songs. its also good if your playing techno/dance and want it to sound like one continuous mix.

well it doesn't crossfade unless mixed the cd that way but if you have say two tracks back to back that are continuous with no brake it won't pause betwwn those tracks. I dunno of any headunit that crossfades off the top of my head. it would have to be crossfaded before burning
