Crazy midbass out of my PG RSD 6.5s??? Not so much...

If you gave me the choice between cheap speakers that were properly installed with multiple layers of deadening, all holes filled solidly, decoupled from the door, baskets treated to prevent resonances, deflex pads, etc...vs. a pair of ultra-high end drivers simply bolted into the door, I'd pick the first one every time. Every time.
It's not a "band-aid", it's a requirement.

Once someone has done all that, and still doesn't have midbass up to the level that they want, then it may be time to start shopping for new drivers. Until then, there's no way to know.

But, what do I know, it's just meaningless banter...
x2.

This is what has made the DIY route so successful; the install is the most important aspect. However, not one is incredibly greater than the other. Though deadening should be at the top of the list always. Mass loading drops resonant frequency, and that's very important with in-door drivers.

Its a free country you can have it your way,but I would be pretty pissed off

if I BOLTED in a nice set of speakers I worked hard to save for and they sounded like crap (and it's happend to all of us)- I always looked at door treatments as an added bonus or added SQ to an already researched design...car audio speaker designers create speakers for car doors ,open and ugly with asst shapes and sizes...call up your favorite car speaker mfg and ask them if there speakers are only good in vehicles with door treatments and let me know what they say.......

...then you need to pay more attention to an install. There is a reason why SO MANY people suggest sound deadening.

I myself was one of those people who thought, I buy the speakers they need to perform. But if you take a bmw 3 series into the wilderness, and expect it to perform off-roading like a champ, then you are vastly wrong.

The car, while very nice, is bad under crappy conditions.

same goes for speakers.

I wouldn't.

Just like I wouldn't be angry if put my Fostex Sigmas in an open baffle and had absolutely no bass response. Or put a pair of Magnepans right up against a wall and wondered why they sound horrible. I could buy a pair of $1600 Lowthers and if I put them in the wrong enclosure, they'd sound like crap. That's not the fault of the speaker, that's reality.

Any speaker is dependent on its environment for the final sound, we don't live in anechoic chambers with our ears placed a meter from the driver.

One more suggestion, and sorry if it's already been mentioned:

Check the wiring of the crossovers, mids, and tweeters to make sure they are all properly phased. Just one crossed positive and negative can wreak havok on some systems.

the rsd's should not be harsh at all. mine definitly are not. where are yours mounted?

deaden you doors and give them a ton of power and you'll like them.

deadening is very important. i deadened and sealed my doors when i had my stock speakers in running off of the head unit. it even gave them some pretty good mid-bass.

Tweets are in the stock sail panels, mids in the doors.

I agree, deadening is important... But it's kind've hard to do when it's 20 degrees or less outside, without a garage //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/redface.gif.62fdbfe1a101588a808c4cff71bcb942.gif But I think I've said that a couple times already ;-)

I'll bridge the amp in the meantime. I'll be deadening/claying in the spring.

I do think the speakers are VERRRY FVCKING LOUD, so don't get me wrong on their quality. I was just going based on what others have said and currently, don't think I agree.

I also certainly don't think my install is half assed. Just not 100% complete yet. So maybe 3/4 assed //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned how cold temps can make speakers perform differently... I suspect the shitty install/lack of deadening combined with extremely stiff suspension due to very cold temperatures is robbing the speaker of it's low end response.

I have not noticed this...after 5 minutes or so, the interior of the car is pretty warm AND I think the driver itself makes heat...Although I am not sure, I have doubts thinking that cold weather is to blame.

As for this discussion about deadening...I would deaden if I was just putting in $25 coaxials. I thought mounting to a secure baffle was a part of "typical" installation, not going above and beyond.

I fail to see how anyone can refer to my install as "shitty" //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

I just didn't put deadener on yet. LOL.

You guys are a trip.
