I believe that what he is doing is perfectly legal. He claims he purchased all of them, so they become his to do as he like with. If anything, at somepoint down the road there could be a problem proving he once indeed did own the actual disc, but could be remidied via reciepts.

I agree with you, personally, it sounds legit to me just intuitively.

But people could, in theory, continually re-sell that one copy and each person retain a copy of the media -- I'm wondering what the law says about that, as sometimes the law is not quite intuitive. The recording / movie industry would "lose" just as much money to each person who re-sold the media as if they had downloaded it as they only received money for one copy to the original owner -- just like when someone buys it and puts it online for others to download.

Not if I make a copy for myself, then sell the original. Then, there are two copies, while only one was paid for. This can continue ad infinitum.
