coolant problems

My problem is that the coolant is bubbling and backing up into the reservoir

and overflowing.

Car is not over heating. temp gage is at about 1/4.

Fan is kicking in.

Going out now to get a thermostate and a new rad cap and see if that works.

My first guess would be that the fan's clutch is bad (if this is an older car) but the thermostat would be the next best guess.

If the coolant if boiling your coolant might not be able to handle normal motor temps. It might not be protecting to the proper temp. Dont always trust the temp. guage though. One thing you could do is if you are positive that it is not overheating you could flush out your coolant and put new in so you are positive that that is not one of your problems. If your car is overheating then check the fan clutch or the thermostat.

If your coolant is bubbling / almost boiling then I would suggest your temp gauge isn't particularly accurate //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

Water boils @ 212 degree F and when you add normal antifreeze/coolant to that the boiling point rises.

Once it is to the point of bubbling and backing up into the overflow reservoir while the gauge is still at around 1/4 would be indicative of an inaccurate sensor or something...

had the same problems in a 97 grand prix gt 3.8 come to find out the radiator was cracked...might help
