Considering the purchase of an iMac, figured some of you worthless tools could help

Cant you get osx to run on a regiular PC..maybe build your own PC and put osx on it...might save you a few bucks over a real mac...

I in no way am saying i know anything about doing what i am suggesting...i just sort of remember reading that it could be done...

im not sure, i imagine that the only way that would be possible is through emulation which would make it painfully slow i imagine. jobbs would have a heartattack if you could use his software without his outragously priced hardware. but if that did work i could build a shuttle pc (if they're still around) and go that route

First of all, you can’t install OS X on a new partition, it needs it’s own drive. For this guide Im installing it on my Sony Vaio TR2A. Since I only have one harddrive, it means I’m wiping windows and all my files in the process. You can easily follow the same steps but instead install it on a second harddrive in your PC. Here is how I have succesfully install OS X x86 NATIVELY on my laptop!

First of all, I think your CPU needs at LEAST sse2. For rosetta and to get itunes and other ppc apps working, you need sse3. My vaio has a Pentuim M, so no rosetta for me. Everything else works. Im posting this from the OS X x86 port of Firefox Wink

1. Download “VMWare files for patched Mac OS X Tiger Intel” from your favorite torrent site. (Hint: Use the search function).

2. Copy tiger-x86-flat.img from the archive to an external USB drive (it’s 6gb)

3. Download Ubuntu Live CD (link) … be sure you get the “Live CD”!!

4. Burn the ubuntu iso, stick it in your pc, and boot it! (make sure you have your bios set to boot to CD)

5. Once ubuntu boots and the gui finally comes up, hook up the USB drive you copied the 6gb image to. A window should pop up showing the contents of the drive. Take note of where its mounted. It should be /Devices/Yourdrivesvolumename

6. Open a terminal window and cd to that directory (/Devices/Yourdrivesvolumename). Do an “ls” to make sure you are in the right place (you should see the 6gb img file.

7. In the terminal window type:

dd bs=1048576 if=./tiger-x86-flat.img of=/dev/hda

Replace hda with the correct drive! If you only have one drive, its probably hda. Thats what mine was. You are about to erase this entire drive so make sure youve got it right and make sure you want to do this! Hit enter. It takes a while… took my vaio about 9 minutes.

8. When it’s done, remove the ubuntu disc and shut down the pc. Disconnect your usb drive. Thats it! When you power it back on, OS X should boot!

For whatever reason, mine hangs when its loading. If this happens to you, boot with the -x option (hit a button at the darwin screen when you boot your pc. enter “-x” and hit enter). Should work without any problems, and I dont see any restrictions being in safe mode.

You’ll notice there is a login screen, and you dont know the password! This image was created by “deadmoo” and we can easily change his password. Reboot the machine again. Again, hit a button at the darwin screen. This time type “-v” and hit enter. At the command prompt screen type:

sh /bin/sh

passwd curtis

(change the password to what you like)

passwd deadmoo

(change the passwrod to what you like)

Done! Now reboot once more, and again use the “-x” option. Everything should boot, and at the login screen enter your new password.

WELCOME TO THE OS X x86 CLUB! Look ma, no vmware!

Note: If you are installing this in a PC and have multiple drives, you dont need to use an external drive or linux distro. Simply dd the image in the same manner to any physical drive in your pc, and when its done boot to that drive and it should work. For windows users, there is a port of dd for windows you can use here.

I messed around with this in vmware before installing natively, and I can tell you running it native is a million times faster! Its full speed. USB works, ethernet works, all the x86 software works. Enjoy!

yeah i dont know about driver support...like i said i just remember reading a while ago that it was possible...it looks like one of those things that people do just to do it...like as a nerdy hobby...not sure how practical it all really is...but shit if i was in your shoes i would at least do a little research and see if it might be worth while.

and your welcome //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

I just think all Apple products are overpriced. I know how to keep my Windows machines running nicely and safe. I also dual boot my main with Mandriva linux. Apple product are good though. I won't knock em and say they are worthless piles. The OS is robust and does what you need it to and due to its small market share is safe by nature(read not a target). We can't really tell you what you should buy. if it suits your needs and you really prefer the MacOS and you think the price is justified, then go for it. Buy 2 even //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

ok, get it you will not regret it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

osX is debian based.

no spyware or virus

it just works, no frigggin aorund tryign to make it run right, turn it on and it works.

sexy machines.

just buy oen and be done with it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif expensive but you pay for something better.

yeah, i dont want it because i have some illusion that its virus proof, im aware that apples small marketshare is what protects them. i just always have problems with conflicts on the windows os, not to mention i like clean simple things. i need to figure out some way to get a tv tuner on the imac if i get it.. what are your thoughts on powerbooks?

Man i havent had any problems with XP, its been rock solid for me.

The only times i have had any sort of problems is when i used to overclock. Was sort of fun buying new chips and testing their limits, but expesive hobby.

That's an ugly hack, friend. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

OP, if you want any [disclosable] information, feel free to instant message me.

due to them being UNIX based, they are very stable, and with the new Intel processors coming out they should be able to run everything

I believe there is a new version of softwindows out (forget the name), if you need MS compatablility,

my G4 has been stable has hell since OSX went on, dual processors and 64bit FTW

Macintosh computers now use some very nice intel processors, some of which are 'dual core' - two CPUs, one package. Unlike Windows dual processor pcs, the Mac handles threading much more effectively. Your dual pentium four only shines under heavy use with particular applications that have dual processor architecture support; in the mac, it's integrated into the OS. So all applications benefit from the extra core, not just (3d Studio Max, Protools, Photoshop)

There's "BootCamp" which allows your Mac to ALSO run Windows. Rumored to be part of the next OS release, "Leopard" but also downloadable as a Beta, currently. Not a soft windows / virtual pc; actual native support layer.

Seems like a pretty easy decision to me //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
