I've read smaller boxes are better for spl. I've read bigger boxes are better for spl. I'm also confused on what port area in relation to box volume has to do with spl output. what does having an enormous port on on small box accomplish? Someone care to explain?

Smaller enclosures are good for putting up numbers on a meter because as you go smaller, you start to drive peaks in the upper frequencies. Connect that with extra cone control due to more air spring for more mechanical power handling, the normally higher tuning frequencies on SPL enclosures, and the high pressure created in small space and you have a nice mixture for some high peak numbers. But it won't be louder over a very large spectrum.

Larger enclosures will reduce mechanical power handling, increase low frequency extension (louder at lower frequencies), and increase the output around resonance of the enclosure (the tuning frequency).

Larger port area helps reduce eddy currents in the air flow in the port which leads to lower port noise and a more efficient port. The larger port area also helps couple pressure from the enclosure into the air of the vehicle.
