Cone area

I searched for an old thread that had this stuff listed out but can't find it. Going on basics, what is the equal of "x" number of smaller subs to a single bigger "x" sub...as in

2 8" = 2 12"

2 10" = 15"

(just example)

I want to go from my single 15" to some smaller subs like 8" or 10" and I want to have more overall cone area than my single 15" had. Im just not sure how many 8"s or 10"s or w/e I need.

It will be more or equal to a 15''?

edit- thanks heath

I thought there was more to it than basic highschool geometry

1 8 = 50.24 sq in1 10 = 78.5 sq in..

1 12 = 113.04 sq in.

1 15 = 176.625 sq in

so..

3 8s beats a 12

3 10s beat a 15

2 12s beat a 15

these are all about, not exact on the comparison.

this is wrong, that would be under the assumption that the subwoofer actually had a piston diameter that was equal to the outside of the surround, not the inside.

the number the OP is looking for when the term "cone-area" is used is effective piston area, basically its how much of the sub is actually moving air. However, 85% of the people on here go by the method previously mentioned which is WRONG

some average values would be

8" = 195cm^2

10" = 310cm^2

12" = 480cm^2

15" = 810cm^2

so, 4-8's or 3-10's will be as close as your going to get. 3 8's would only be 72% of 1-15 where 4-8's would be 96% of 1-15, 3-10's would be 114% of 1-15
