Cone area vs wattage...

I am a former competitor in SPL and SQ. One of the mid-90's to early 2000 guys. When I stopped being competitive is when burp boxes were becoming prevelant. Last time I was at Nationals (Kansas City) Gates was running the white bronco loaded with PPI I believe. Just to give the background for the question...

Seems like the SPL movement has switched some and was wondering if my thought process is too behind. Back in the day we used to run less wattage and more subs. My last SPL build was a Probe GT with 6 Soundstream 15's and two 10.2 amps in a chambered box. Did really well in my wattage class. Now it seems like the trend is less cone area with subs capable of handling gobs of wattage.

Besides cancelation what is the advantage of running less cone area? Is it due to volume limitations and everything being ported of some order or another?

I think I just answered my own questions. My era was small sealed boxes shoving as many as possible in the space. Where today running ported, moderately sized boxes that get just as loud or louder with less cone area due to running more wattage at subs that cab handle it. It is nice that clean wattage is so cheap now.

It kinda depends on what your going for. If you compete there might be cone area limits or power limits...

If your going for a daily pounder then you might want cone area so you have more voice coil to displace heat and you can hammer longer.

If it's up to me I'd rather just have acouple woofers 2-4 and lots of power

With subs handling 2000k each it makes a huge difference. The Soundstream Mules, Kicker Solobaric and CV Strokers were the only thing that could handle much wattage daily and they still didn't handle near what is going on today.

Yea coils have come a long way. A good 3" PE American coil will handle 3000-4000watts clamped daily. It's pretty crazy

mules didnt take much more power than the SPL's it was the spl 160 that took more power

Bigger coils killed efficency so they had to go to more power.

The trend now is killing efficency even more which kills upper bass responce.

But it's cool to say you run 1356788 watts to one sub for dem lowz

But we can play lower louder than the 90s. Way lower, way louder

The dash doing the wave is cool. Hmm, contemplating buying a Ford Probe GT and going ape on it.

I used to do 151 with my old set up...it took 3 alternators and a 4 blue tops to get there.

Whitley (anyone remember Whitley?) 158.7 outlaw.

Ugh...I can see myself getting deep with this. Cheap wattage could **** me in.

12-12" SA e-series with 6k....wonder what that would do in a Probe, walled off?

Yeah the biggest problem with stuffing a ton of woofers in is you can't get proper volume for the subs

Less woofers in an ideal enclosure will beat more woofers in a cramped enclosure

And yes now woofers can handle way more power and have way more xmax

thats not gonna work. You dont have close to enough airspace, those subs are going to suffocate.

Yeah, I was more kidding than anything. I just blurted the first thing that came to mind. I would do the math first. If I pulled the rear seats/cargo trim I could get pretty close to enough space.

I am seriously cruising CL and Ebay for Probes right now. Lol

cone area has little to do with output alone. honestly 1w/1m does too because its taken @ 1khz. its a combination of to many things to go by cone area or wattage. thats straight up stupid..
I was hardly saying that it is a non-moving, single factor issue.

I am newer to this site and can tell your a fucktard dwelling in your mother's basement.

Please remove yourself from ANY thread I start as your input will be looked past.

Hope that was clear enough...

I'm looking for S10 blazers in good condition. That's going to be what I get next, and run high voltage
