Cone area vs wattage...

While i don't agree as much with other posters on how subs didn't handle as much by a drastice margin back in the day (Kove Armeggedons for example) there is truth to that. But, to put it simply, 2 15's in a slightly oversized box with plenty of port area will destroy 6 15's done wrong in too small of a box, especially sealed. A 15 or any size woofer in a properly sized ported box will usually be 5-9 db's louder than the exact same woofer in a sealed box of proper size and the same amp. I also do not go along with the above poster saying 1w/1m means virtually nothing. It means a lot actually. It means with everything equal, minus a few variables that a woofer @ 85 db 1w will require twice the power to equal one that's 88db 1w IF everything is equal. Keep in mind, an efficient woofer could start out at 99db but not get any louder at 1000w, while a woofer starting at 96 db might continue to get louder up to 5000 watts. So it isn't the end all be all, but it is a factor.
Yeah, I get the generals and thanks for the clear post. The thread was more of my surprise in the change of how SPL rigs are built now. Less subs and WAY more wattage. Makes sense (after reading on how much amps and subs have developed) but a complete change from what used to be on top. An entire different direction.

Just really didn't know how the multiple efficient subs stacked up against high wattage subs with similar power in today's comps.

Example for clarities sake: 12-12" subs that are more efficient being fed 6k watts or 4-high power subs with the same 6k.

Seems to me the new (well, new to me) wave of SPL subs being feed plenty of power are the way to go. I am sure the rules for SPL events determine this to some point. Used to be that classes were determined by amp RMS rating into 4 ohm (why I ran two, Soundstream 10.2's). I have read that classes are done by cone area and/or measured wattage (don't quote me).

Just like before it is space available combined with wattage you can run will determine all. All the rest is design and selecting the right components to match each other.

Still a bit blown away that subs can handle that much power and wattage is this cheap.

I have a Pioneer P1R in my man room...maybe I will use it as my HU.

whats wrong with you dude? you act like i was insulting you! i was merely telling you that there is more to it than just alot of woofers or a **** load of power. its no difficult to grasp. back in the early 2000s i competed as well. i had 1 9515 off 3kw doing low 150s walled off sealed up on the b&k. had one of the loudest single woofer installs in the country in that class/powerrange and i was 19 or 20. needless to say i got beat by 6 l7s(the classes where re-tarted) with 3 1200s by .3. that's the whole reason i said what i said.. i smell bullshit in the air everywhere
This is your very first post in the thread below.

cone area has little to do with output alone. honestly 1w/1m does too because its taken @ 1khz. its a combination of to many things to go by cone area or wattage. thats straight up stupid..
"That's straight up stupid." I used correct punctuation but hopefully you get the point.

"Merely telling someone" that things have changed because of x,y or z is clearly different than stating stupidity. If you can't grasp that you have no hope.

I build all kinds of rifles from long range to SBR'S with cans. If someone were to come on a gun forum I frequent and asked about using a .223 for 1000 yard shooting the first thing I say isn't that they have a "straight up stupid" ideal. I would explain through the process of why I would begin.

But clearly I am not you. I don't pose and puff my chest. I don't demean to make myself feel better. I surely have more self respect than to sit and take the **** you do because you are clearly the turd in the punch bowl. Yet you take it like a poser does...can't let it go. Seriously, pound salt. You are out of your depth...

You took things way out of context. Not my fault. I'm the poser though yet i go against alot of the mainstream and do my own thing.. good call..it would be easy and cheap for me to follow the grain but that's not me..

I'm looking for S10 blazers in good condition. That's going to be what I get next, and run high voltage
middle 2000's my buddy had a bagged extreme blazer with 24" floaters. 3 18" re SX walled , us amps. was pretty nasty.

it was yellow, you may have been a lil too young to remember seeing it in town....

but good luck finding one in nice shape tho!! i gave up few years ago lol
