Cone area vs rms

Generally speaking will one 12" sub thats pushing double the rms of two 12s be louder? Or does double the cone area make a big diffrence?

Now i know there are other factors to take into consideration like the box tuning install what its going in etc but just generally speaking which would be louder? Not sure how rms and cone area compares.

All things being equal, they are the same in theory. If you're running over 1000W or so, the pair may edge out since with heat comes more resistance (less efficiency and output). A weaker sub may also not have enough motor force or BL to really use the full ammount of power.

On the flip side, most people skimp out on box size (or bracing, or doing double layers or whatever), so a single sub in a very solid, properly sized box > 2 subs in a too-small box that isn't rock solid.

Also single sub eliminates potential phase and loading issues that may arise from mutliple subs.

Be a little more specific.

Ok im getting my 12" IA death penalty in monday. Pushing it with a zx2500.1 that pushes 2828rms. The box is 2.5 cubes at 34hz. Double baffle and 45s.

I had 2 kicker comp vx 12s pushed by a zx1500.1. Box was built to kickers specs nothing that i really tuned just built what they suggested.

That DP has quite a bit more motor force than those CVX's, and assuming you have the electrical to back it up that amp will be giving it plenty of power. It's hard to say which will be louder because you'll have 2 different boxes...I'm sure kicker's specs for the cvx probably aren't ideal. I would say the DP has the potential to be louder but it comes down to how the box performs.

2500W is asking a lot out of that sub. Course you're comparing apples to oranges. I'd say a pair of DP's at 1250W would do better than one at 2500 because you're definitely getting into compression fast at 2500W
