Computer Question (HELP)

I am ol'school and don't really know much about computers, accept the basics so maybe some on here can help me with this question.

I purchased a laptop for my daughter (for college and to get her off my desktop) and we purchased a wirless router so she can do her computer thing as I do mine. Well her router is ran through my DSL modem box (AT&T DSL) to her wireless router.

Well, where the problem comes in is, when she is not on her laptop (the internet) my computer will not let me go online, so I have to unplug and bypass her router to go online. But if she is online on her laptop, my computer will let me hook up to the internet.

Is there something I can do myself to fix this problem in my computer settings (control panel) or anything? She had the Geek Squad from Best Buy come hook up this wirless router crap, so I'm thinking about getting these little peter puffers to come back and fix it if there isn't anyway I can do it myself. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Late for work. Thanks.

Mike...

What kind of router is it and how is it hooked up? I can't see why that would be causing problems though. Anyway, I'll try to help you if I can.

And if for some reason the router itself is the problem, I suggest getting an Apple Airport Extreme. It only has ports for one wired computer, but has a built-in wireless print server which is GREAT. I love mine and I will never buy another type. If you ever need to add an extra wired connection (another desktop, maybe a game console) you can pick up an ethernet hub on eBay for $20 or less.

The router is a D-Link WBR-1310 and the phone line runs into my DSL modem, then a line from the modem to the router and then into my computer (emachines).

Make sure the modem goes into the WAN port, and then make sure the router is set up to G wireless to she has access, and then you plug your computer in 1 slot right next to the WAN.
Yes it goes into the WAN port and then into the slot next to the WAN port. What does set-up to G-wireless mean?

Like I said earlier, if she is not online on her laptop my computer says (most of the time) cannot connect to server check all connections and try to connect again.

You may just have to reconfigure the connection on your computer. It should tell you how in your manual, or you can check out here:

Thank you for the link. I went through all the steps of hooking up this wireless router and the douche bag from Geek Squad had the yellow and blue cables swtched around. Now everything semms to be working fine. Thanks dude...//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/thankyou.gif.5451126d09e870f796f50c3a4dd5acd7.gif

No problem. That's why I never trust installers from big box stores. They just don't pay attention to stuff. Generally, if you can read, you can set up your own stuff. Tries your patience a little sometimes, but not as much as trying to fix something you paid to have done lol.

Learn something out of this ordeal?
Yes.

1) I shouldn't have let my daughter hook that router up to my internet line.

2) I should have learned more about computers when I was in high school, but in the early 80's and being a stoner, computers wasn't of high importance.

3) And don't trust the Geek Squad.

Also it it still doing the samething, saying there is no internet connection. I hohed it all up according to what the manual says, so it must be a problem with the router or something needs to be changed in my desktops settings.

My daughter is the one who had them come over and install this crap. So I guess they need to come and fix it right.

That router is a piece of shit //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif
Yeah, I didn't have much luck with my d-link equipment a few years ago. But the computer had problems when it connected to the internet before I bought it. I thought it was just a bad modem, but it may have been a worm of some sort.

It almost sounds like Internet sharing is setup on her Laptop and your desktop is configured to share it through her laptop. Therefore when she isn't on you aren't. Did you run your network connection wizard?
