so what happens when you press f8 or f2 nothing? did you try a dif winxp cd get very specific on what you do and what happens when you do it so we can figure this out

you can get a 2.5" to 3.5" hard drive adapter for like $3 on ebay, and just hook it up to the atapi/ide cable in your computer

don't know why you'd want to buy an entire external enclosure just to diagnose a one-time problem

F2 takes me into the setup options

F12 chooses what to boot from, which i cant boot my winxp cd cuase obviously its not recognizing my cd drive. its bein gay none-the-less.

do you have recovery disks?

that'd be the one free solution

you could atleast find out if the hard drive is fried

so when you press f2 with the cd in the drive and yo uchoose to boot from the cd rom and it says press any key you press any key and it doesnt work? and nothing happens when you press f8?

the same thing happen to me a long time ago,

NTLDR is missing

press any key to continue

and when i pressed a key it just turns off and the same thing appears, i called toshiba and said that its a boot file and there is nothing really to do. so they told me to put in the system recovery CD.

to boot the cd:

when that screen appears , put in cd then press and hold Crontrol and C at the same time.

i will try that. one problem, i cant find any of the dell cds that came with my laptop lol...i wonder if you can download and burn to a cd? could i try that control + C with the winxp cd?

grayfox: when i boot from cd it just restarts and goes back to NTLDR is missing press control + alt + delete to restart.

didnt try pressing F8 cause it wasent an option listed but ill see when i get home

NTLDR is one of your main boot files, your kinda in a bad position here.

chkdsk /r will fix that no problem I have to fix atleast 2 a month in my job.

you sure your windows disk is good? you using the dell disk? cause you need to boot to a windows disk to do the repair mode and the chkdsk /r

i cant find my xp pro copy, i used my friends xp pro, would it matter if its the 32 bit edition or not? lmao

I got it to boot from the winxp cd, I clicked repair, and it comes up:

1: C:/WINDOWS

Which Windows installationg would you like to log onto (to cancel, press enter)

If I press enter, it takes me back to the dell startup screen
