computer guru's...come in

Depends. If the BIOS is password locked and the disc drive isn't set before the hard drive on boot priority, you're screwed, ALTHOUGH if you find out the laptop's model number, you might be able to Google a backdoor password for the BIOS...

If you can do that, then you can get yourself a copy of Windows and reformat.

Any idea of what the specs are?

Also, most laptops do not have a CMOS clear jumper. However, on my IBM T22 I had (FREE) you could take a panel off on the bottom and unplug the BIOS battery pack and that would clear it.

when i had a problem with the one i had, it was an ibm, which i heard is the toughest one. i am almost positive that i was told that the password is in the motherboard, so changing hard drives won't help.

same specs as my machine....i'm told these cost between 2000-3000 dollars new

if it is before boot it is a bios password so your basically screwed. if it belonged to a corp then trying to call ibm isnt going to help because the laptop is probably registered to that corporation

if it is a windows password, just format the hard drive and reinstall

why not do the honorable thing and return it?

i don't have the machine....someone is trying to sell it to me. It is "hot" per se, but not in the way that the company owns it and has reported it missing. Its hot in the way that, they got all new laptops and these were supposed to be destroyed since they most likely contain propriatary information and a few managed to escape the destructo-machine

If you take out the cmos battery, it should clear the password protection. It's an easy procedure, even for the computer illiterate. Remove the battery, and any AC plug. Take off the biggest cover on the bottom of the computer (there may only be one, but there may be 2 with one being the cover for the HDD). Find the watch type battery, and remove it. Press the power button repeatedly, and let it set for about 5 minutes, plug the AC (or battery) back in, and turn it on. Keeping the battery out. That SHOULD have reset the password protection to default (no password).

wow never heard of a corporationg destroying whole computers. usually they just destroy the hard drives to protect data and considering from the specs you gave how new the computers are i would be very sceptical

you could part it out for more than you paid so....

Some default BIOS passwords, in case the clearing CMOS doesn't take off the password protection, just returns the password to a default BIOS password.
