Computer based RTA

I am looking for an RTA that uses a Notebook computer with 30 bands 1/3 octave. Or should I use a stand alone unit?

Your pretty limited. TrueRTA is probably the most common. Your looking at $40 just for software and then another $100 for a mic.

i use True RTA. getting a USB measurement mic by Dayton is a nice option and it works well.

You will be very limited based on the quality of your sound card. Odds are unless you have a very high end laptop the on-board sound card will be inadequate. Buying an external USB soundcard is an option, but quality of those is limited and they require initialization every time you plug them in.

Odds are you'll do best with a stand-alone kit. I'm really happy with my SPL-Labs wireless meter, I'd have good expectations for their RTA.
