Well, the short of it is that more wire is added to the ends of the coil so that as the coil begins to leave the gap, more wire is entering the gap (because of the thicker winding of wire at the ends of the voice coil), thus maintaining a relatively constant and flat BL level even at the extremes of excursion.

Just a random thought, what would be the disadvantages of winding the coil loosely but equidistantly around the former, and then make the magnet significantly thinner in an overhung motor? Every time one coil leaves the gap, the next moves in at the same rate, keeping BL linear throughout the stroke. See the attachment. I'm guessing an absurd loss of BL and gain in inductance, but it would lower the MMS and magnet requirements.
