I have had a problem lately (posted originally in another thread) with my left side speakers being quiet in the cold. I'm not asking for solutions to my own problem, I'm just asking for answers to a question... Do door speakers (Infinity Kappa 6x9's, in my case) get quieter in extreme cold? My subwoofer appears to play fine, but my left side door speakers are quiet and without bass.

I just didn't know if door speakers were affected as much as subwoofers are by the cold.

Thanks in advance for replies.

My car starts to sound 'thin or hollow' when it gets around 0 degrees F or colder. It gets quieter and loses top & bottom end - like listening through a paper towel tube.

I'm no expert, but I've read this is mainly due to 1) speaker suspension can stiffen in extreme cold, and 2) changes in air density make things sound different to your ears.

Things sound fine after the car warms up a bit.

I've also read where damp foam surrounds can crack in really cold weather if not allowed to warm up. I've never experienced this myself though.

Does all 4 speakers sound that way or a couple of them?

I've never seen it localized to one side. I know it would be a pain but could you swap speaker wires at the source unit and see if the problem changes sides? See if the source unit or amp is causing your issue.

As for the change in sound I don't notice it so much in my highs as I do on the sub bass. When it starts getting 10 degrees and colder it greatly reduces my subs output until it warms up a bit. The surround is very stiff and I imagine the spider isn't quite as pliable either. Doesn't make for a whole lot of output from a small sealed box ten.

After investigating, I have found my problem: my left side door speaker's (Infinity Kappa 6x9's) cone appear to be frozen in the cold weather (

It sounds as though Infinity door speakers have this problem of freezing cones in frigid weather. Has anybody else had this problem?
