closer on amp problem

ok, now i just messed around with my cd player, and i took apart all the connections from my cd player to my harness, and then reconnected my amp. I hooked up me old amp first, and the protection light came on, and i couldnt get rid of that. It says in my manual that the only 2 reasons that the red protection light to come on, and thats due to a temperature shut down, which i cant believe considering how low the volume was on my cd, i didnt have my subs hooked up, and its freakin 30 degrees here now! The other possibility it has is that the speaker wires have a short cicruit. it says to fix it to seperate speaker wire and insulate. what exactly does that mean? next, i figured that since i had pwr, maybe my new memphis amp would work, so i hooked it up to all the wires, but i didnt hook the subs up to the amp, and no light came on, not even the protection light. i checked my fuses, they are all good. anyone with an idea?

i forgot to mention that when my amp first turned back on in protection mode, i only had the RCAs and remote wire hooked up, so it couldnt be the spkr wire, it must be temp, can an amp not switch on from being cold? or could that protect light be from just not having subs hooked up to it at all? i tried doing the same with my memphis, but it didnt work
