Clear Crisp SPL?

i know someone like you, JimJ, punkorama, and a few others would not be satisfied because you guys are more SQ based guys from the posts i have read over time on this forum, but i would venture to say most people would be happy with the right install. i know i was quite surprised with it, and im digging the sub. just my .02c
Just to clarify a bit...

I don't agree with SPL competition. I don't agree with "SPL" subwoofers. I don't agree with blasting rap music all day, every day.

I do understand why people do it and everyone is very entitled to their own personal preferences.

But I still say, as much as anyone will listen...

Why is the standard mic position STILL on the dash for SPL competitions? Especially for Street and Super Street, wouldn't the headrest make more sense?

*Before you read on, when I refer to "you" I'm not referring to the OP, but to people who are defending SPL subs as a daily woofer thinking it is what is needed to get loud.*

What I'd like to know is, if you intend to use an SPL sub as a daily sub, do you plan on upgrading your frontstage? If not, then say goodbye to vocals because all you will hear is bass. I personally from time to time listen to rap just for the bass and I do understand that you want to get loud and an SPL sub comes to mind.

Question is, how loud do you want to be for a daily setup on music? If you're looking to be in the mid to upper 140's, I think that is kind of ridiculous. You are leading yourself to damaging your ears. You may not care now, but you will later. Also what people don't realize is, its not always the subs you use, but the application. If you get a sub with good sq abilities and also can get loud and have a well designed enclosure, you don't have to worry about sending it 4,000w to get loud, you can get away with maybe just 1,000w give or take.

I used to have a 10" underhung TC sounds driver that i threw in a .7 cube sealed box off 750w (trunk setup) and was doing around 132-133 on the TL. The box was for another sub. Had I made one specifically for this driver I'm sure I could have gained a bit more. Right now I got an 18" RL-p in a sealed enclosure and it got pretty much as loud as my dd 9515 in 5.5 cubes tuned to 38 Hz. The RL-p is no SPL sub and for it to get as loud and sound MUCH cleaner was definitely worth the swap. I was putting 2.5k on the DD and probably getting about 1.5-2k on the RL-p. The RL-p did a 140.1 @ 36 Hz while the 9515 did 140.8 @ 56 Hz. On music the DD was doing 137 or 138 on music and the RL-p I haven't tested yet, but I'm sure its about the same.

My point is, you don't need an SPL sub to get loud for a daily driver. Even if you listen to rap, having that SQ in the sub does make a noticeable difference. You can get loud and sound good whether you pop in some rap music, or you wanna put in some Phil Collins. All that may be necessary is minor adjustments to the EQ on your substage.

haha, word x1000000

No... They just have a fake site to trick people...
i knew it was too good to be true... im still going to start a thread to find out where i should go to order it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

its just the way the sport is... why does america not adopt the metric system? because it doesnt make sense to most, and they would rather just keep calling things what they are //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

most sanctioning bodies do have classes that measure at the head //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

yes, yes it would lol

Surely we can round up enough people with common sense so that it can be changed?

The US and the metric system...that's a whole other world that, again, I don't totally understand.

its not that it needs to be changed... its just that the people that want to measure from a location other than the legal position need to learn to compete in those classes //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

its just the way it was started and thats where they chose to put the mic. there are classes that measure at the kick, some measure in the port, some measure at the head rest, but legal position is at the mic. its just the way it is //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif .

the metric system thing was just an analogy, i tried to think of another sport that has something weird that everyone questions, but i dont pay attention to sports too much and couldnt think of anything //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

people buy cars that are fast in a straight line, but dont turn very well //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif
there is a market for everything, and for many people, they dont need/want something that is going to be good all around, but they would rather have something that is amazing for a few things.

look at how many GSXR1300's suzuki sells... fast bike, but not great in the twisties, yet they still sell like hot cakes for the streets, because they suit many peoples interests.
You're comparing two completely different things. Going fast is fun as hell no matter what way you put it. How is listening to 150db fart noises considered fun?

no, they are two VERY comparable things...

if you are too narrow minded/stubborn to understand that, then you fail at understanding car audio altogether...

why do you think they call it DB drag? its the exact same theory as drag racing.

drag racing = go as fast as possible in a straight line

DB drag = be as loud as possible for a certain freq.

road racing = be the best/fastest around a course consisting of ups/downs/lefts/rights

SQ = be the best sounding over the entire spectrum of audible freq's.

saying that comparing SPL to drag racing is two different things is an ignorant statement. some people might not like going fast at all, so drag racing isnt for them. some people enjoy SPL and loud stereos, same thing as drag racing.

now please go pound some common sense into yourself //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

i have a friend that has been in a few VERY fast cars, and a 5.0 that can do a straight wheelie from a dead stop...he doesnt find it fun after only 1 run in the car. so just cause he finds it boring...does it automatically mean his preference is garbage since it doesnt agree with yours? (not talking to you hoss)

i can agree with that, but at the same token, do all drag racers go foot to the floor from stoplight to stoplight?

at the same token do people like scotty j go around town burping at near 180Db?

the whole point of my comparison was that different people enjoy different things, and saying that something is stupid/pointless because you are too ignorant to even attempt to understand it is pretty retarded.

i like loud stereos, doesnt mean that i listened to my truck at full tilt when i had it. i like fast cars also, doesnt mean that i floor it all the time. and at the same time, i like good sounding stereos, so i built my truck around them //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif . and i like cars that can handle well, and now i have the best handling car ive ever owned (that really doesnt say much though //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif)

the whole point of the conversation, you dont have to understand something for other people to enjoy it. theres different things for different people.
