class d amps

What in God's name is a digital amplifier. I'll tell you, there is NO such thing as a digital amplifier. Digital information from cd is in 1's and 0's right? So then a digital amplifier would give you what then.........thats right.......great big 1's and 0's . An amplifier amplifies ANALOG signals and thats it.......thats all they are capable of amplifying. Class D amps are called class D amps because class a, b, and c were already used up. What makes a class d amp special is their very fast switching power supply rails. Thats why up until this year there hasn't been a full range class d amp.

Hope this clears a few things up.

your missing my point, say my class a/b draws 60 amps, and i am going to use 2 of your new class d amps to run a set of components (you said you would use 2 to get stereo) so say each amp draws 30, 30 plus 30 + 60, now wouldn't it be easier to just use a class a/b????

Ok, I see what you're saying. But I was comparing efficiency of a class D amp to a class a/b amp.....NOT practicality. You won't see me run out and buy 2 of these amps. I love my Premier amps (class a/b). And I'm not changing amps for quite a while.

I just think its cool that someone finally made a full range class d amp after so many said it couldn't be done. thats all

sq is the best on class a......i agree, my buddy even uses a class a planet audio tube amp, designed by bk butler....**** nice amps.....except i hate how long tubes take to warm up...but a small price to pay...

Hate to burst your bubble... but TI has a digital amplifier designed and tested. Bob Carver claims to have one done that will do a kW or two and is the size of a pack of cigarettes.

http://www.stereophile.com/shownews.cgi?1003

Note the date on the article, TI had this (one of many) digital designs out since April of 2001. Note the cost, this is why they are not out yet.

Your explanation of class D is wrong also, the major change is not in the power supply, it is in the output configuration. And infinity had full range class D's out several years ago, and a few home audio companies had them out years prior to that.

calling Class D amps "digital" is a misnomer started by an eager JBL amp tech back in the day, since the on-off (switching) characteristic of the power supply is resemblent of the on / off switching for computers..

A little note from our illustrious member larry, found it in my inbox...

"Hey, why don't you just follow my name around all the forums and contradict whatever I say.??? Just ****off.

Obviously if infinity made a full range class d many years ago and not too many people know about it, it must be a piece of shit.

Enough said.

Larry "

Must not like being disagreed with.. Especially when he is proven incorrect on several points. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
