Clarion CZ 509 help

I have a Clzrion CZ 509 head unit. Just got a 5th generation ipod from my buddy. i hooked it up the first time and you where able to run the music through the ipod. i went back to use it again and now it locks the ipod up and only works through the headunit. Well today my buddy hooked his other nano up thats the newest generation and it worked fine. Iknow there is a setting under adjustments called S control... you have to have it on for the music to be controlled through the ipod. I try chaning the S control feature but it for some reason wont switch. has anyone else had this problem? I was wonder if the ipod needs to be reset, but i think that will erase all the music on it.

Any help would be great.
