Clarification for Alpine PXA-H701?

Alright, currently im ditching my entire system minus my rainbow pro components, which consisted of alpine 9853, 2 diamond 12 m6 mk2 orion 4002 and hifonics 1500bxd which is all for sale now. Anyways, im going to be going a carputer route, and I was reading in the best sq thread that you could use the PXA-H701 with the controller and would not need a headunit, any truth do this? I would run the output from the computer to this unit than run the output from this unit to the amp which would than give the signal to the speakers. Does this sound right? By doing this would elimnate the need for an expensive sound car and cut down on costs on the carputer, and I read that is a great processor. So if you can answer any of these questions please let me know. Thank you.
