I'm not a computer expert but figured this is a good deal for $350. I haven't come across anything better for the price.

depends on what generation of I7. Some of the 6th generation I3s are faster than 2nd and 3rd and even some 4th generation I5/I7s in single thread processing aka every day use.
Springfield models even being the lower end budgeted boards are faster then the newer i7s.

The i7 and all newer models focus more on cpu load spreading and higher gpu specs on board and larger ram availability.

this.

while I agree that many of the i3's and other generation processors are faster for single task performance and clock speed due to the inherent advantages of their design, i dont think that it's fair to compare an i3 to an i7 for example - the multitude of design factors that change their usability makes it more of an apples to oranges argument

I'm going on 4 years with a $800-$1000 laptop, i7 processor, and it's still as fast as the day i bought it. haven't even considered a fresh install and restore yet.

learning to use msconfig does help.

edit: the proliferation of technology that uses multiple threads/cores will provide a vast improvement to the usefulness of a processor with multiple cores like the i7

You can get it if you need a comp. I personally like running desktops only. building my own with a nice motherboard that has decent audio, fast new 10 gbps sata ports to really make great use of your SSD and good circuitry for better power delivery to cpu, memory and graphics. Most pre-built comps have sh*tty non branded alibaba special mother boards. that has jack sh*t on it. Laptops are always slow as fk to me, audio sound card is normally **** poor, always come with bloatware. I hate them with a passion. If i had to choose a laptop, i'd get lenovo, asus or msi

It's for someone else. Definitely not looking to build my own computer yet. Still much to learn.

Its been 4 years since they say they have been working on ways to improve multi core usage on software and programs. So far I still see single thread power is the best for everyday and gaming purposes. Only when you start doing server work, special designs or video rendering is when you want to look at the I7s. If not. I3s are blazing fast for daily usage for pennies in comparison. Recently revamped a lot of my buddy's aging gaming setups with 2nd and 3rd gen I7 processors from mainstream companies to the new skylake i3. The difference is staggering.
