You can find JL slash amps for dirt cheap these days.

Good amps are investments. If you go too cheap you'll sacrifice reliability and resale value if you want to upgrade later.

What would be your top 3 or 5 brands to look at?

On a budget I would look into mmats, JL slash and old school like Us amps, Alpine v12, Ppi etc..

Just got to look around. Right now a guy local is selling a 1000v2 for $475. Pretty sure I could get it for 400.
