if i buy a cheap headunit that has lets say 1 rca preout at 2 volts and hookup a clarion eq that has 7 volt preouts would that be a good idea? or is it just better to get a headunit with 4 volt and some eq features.

thanks //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

That was my last setup before I got the JVC im currently selling. I had a older Pioneer CD player (non MP3) that had 2 volts if I was lucky, running to my Audiocontrol Four1 EQ/Linedriver. Worked fine for me for well over a year.

But I would recommend just getting a good HU with the features you want, its worth it in the end. My Pioneer was very basic, but all I listen to was music from my Creative MP3 player.

More chance of system noise with two units (head unit and EQ) rather than one... also more difficult to match extra gains... also, more wiring and an extra piece of electronics to break... if you can get the features you want all in the head unit, it's worth the price of admision.
