changed enclosures retuning help?

i have 2 12w6s, and they are in a sealed box, and would distort( i think thats what they were doin) at a lower volume (30) and now i put them in a ported box, i am able to turn the volume louder (35- max) without any distortion i think. how do i tell if my subs are distorting in the ported box. With my old subs i would know i was playing them to hard when i smelled some type of burning of something like that. as these are way more expensive i really dont want to mess them up.

Unless your new box has areoports, you're not going to be able to change what it's tuning is without drastic enclosure modification.
