I need info on international cellphones. I know that their are some on the market that you can purchase and use outside the US for around $1.50 or more a minute...OUCH!!

The problem is that my phone is not an "international" phone. I did some reading and was told that you can take your current phone out the country and get it "unlocked" and purchase one of their sim cards and you are set.

How true is this?

Also I currently have a Nextel i836

im not sure on your nextel, because that operates on a different system then other networks do, im more familiar with gsm (cingular, tmobile) with these you can get a phone which is called tri-band/quadband that means it operates on diff frequencies so you can pick up diff. signals whereever u go, (some networks operator on 800, some 900, some 1800, some 1900) therefore having a quadband your covered, as far as unlocking the phone, usually its a code you type in based on your imei number of your phone..but then again some are only able to be done through a flash box that the store will have to do if its alrdy not unlocked, but if it is unlocked u can pop in anothers sim card (which nextel doesnt use), so i suggest buying a new phone over there or something..gl
