i like to salmon and sturgeon fish out in the ocean. trout and crappie in the lakes..ima be fishing all next week and wakeboarding. cant wait

I have watched sturgeon fishing several times on TV. Never in saltwater, always in rivers such as the Columbia. Would love to real in one of those 500lb monsters!

My catch= 28 eating sized blues and channels + 4 3-6lb flatheads
I got the pleasure of cleaning them all.

= over 10lbs of catfish fillets!

Didn't chop off any heads.

Step 1- Take a fillet knife and make cuts right behind the dorsal fins on both sides of fish

Step 2- Take fish skinners and pull that skin off

Step 3- Clip fish down on fish skinning board

Step 4- Starting at the tail, angle fillet knife and slice until you reach backbone

Step 5- Cut right along backbone up the fish, and then angle above ribcage/vitals

Step 6- Put fillets in pan, throw fish in bucket!

i live 10mins from the columbia river. fishing for those by any dam gets you big *** ones lol

IMO anything over 5lbs is not good eating. They just seem to taste like shit when they get bigger. I caught 20lb~ Flathead a while back and it tasted like pure dog shit. Same river about a week later i caught about 10 channels weighing it at about 3lb's each, they tasted great, the one that was about 13lbs~ tastes like shit again...

We used to have a "flush tank" when we fished a shit ton. We would throw our catch in the ank of nice CLEAN filtered water for a few days and let the nasty shit flush out of them. They all seemed to taste MUCH better after that...

Flatheads are the only good eating catfish once they reach a large size. The key is to cut ALL the red meat out. That red meat will ruin a fillet. I even cut all the red meat out of the smaller flatheads. There will be a red line of meat where it runs along the backbone. I always cut the meat in half down that line and then trim it. Once you are left with pure, white meat, the fillets are as delicious on a 30lber as they are a 2lber.

As far as channels..The biggest we have caught was 14lbs and it was not great at all. My room mate caught a 11lb blue earlier this summer and it wasn't all that great either. The key to those fish is to try to get it down to pure white meat too and keep it to thin fillets. The fatter fillets hold a lot of "oil" that gives it TOO much of a fishy taste.

And that flush tank sounds like an excellent idea! bet it'd help a ton on those bigger channels and blues.

As far as eating, I'll take 2lbers all day long. Nice 3-4oz fillet off each side. And a hell of a lot easier cleaning than the big ones.
