Cat v Dog....round one

Here's the scenario....my gf currently has a cat. I am currently buying a house, which she will move into in a couple months. At the house, I want a dog. However, we want to be sure the cat and dog get along. She can't have the dog at her place as dogs aren't allowed at her apt. She doesn't want to leave the cat at my house because she has the cat for companionship.

What is the best way to intergrate the dog and cat?

I am suggesting me getting a small newborn puppy kind of dog. In the 2 or 3 months in between times, the dog will still be pretty small and young. Her cat is atleast one...so they won't fight really as the dog and cat will be about the size.

FWIW, the dog I want is a beagle.

kill the cat first, then the dog would be fine.

Or best thing would be to get the dog when it's really young so it won't know hatred for cats yet

probably the best bet

my dog and my girl's cat used to fight a lot(we just gave the cat back to her mom) but my dog is almost 12 and never liked cats much and her cat is 13 and never been around other animals let alone dogs

so I say get a puppy and introduce them as often as you can

Cats and dogs are not supposed to co-exist together. It's one or the other. I would go for the one that happens to exist better in the backyard and is known as man's best friend. Oh, that's called a dog.

Well, the puppy will be at my house from very young until about two more months...after two months the puppy will be introduced to the cat. The cat will be older than the dog.

If you get a puppy or young dog and socialize them a lot you shouldnt have as many issues. You do realize you are getting a breed of dog that runs small furry animals up trees right? Any beagle no matter how well socialized or trained is going to have the hunting insticnts and try to tree the cat. Just get the cat one of those kitty condo things (not a clue what they really are I'm a dog person) so it has some where to get away from the dog. Beagles aren't agressive by nature just like to tree so you should be fine.

Is the cat declawed,if not the cat will put the dog in place.getting a puppy will allmost allways work out the puppy will grow up seeing the cat as part of its pack.I dont think you have to worry bout a beagle hurting the cat unless its a very docile indoor cat, beagles are pretty well mannered dogs and a decent size cat would tear it up.Good luck

The cat is not declawed, but will be when it comes to my house. The cat has a tendancy to tear up shit.

If they don't get along get ready for alot of broken stuff from the cat running around jumping on everything, and alot of barking. Especially from a beagle. Other then that the best suggestion was to try and get them together at early ages so they bond.

What if I brought the puppy over her apt from time to time so they get aquainted on his (the cat's) "turf"?
