Cars soon to be 36 Volts !!!

I think it's a great idea, the car audio envioronment is very inefficient and 36 Volt system will definatly lower the strain on many charging systems.

But the batteries will need to be larger and will have less reserve capacity.

The change to 36/42 volts as opposed to 12/16 is going to be very gradual. Every change in the automotive industry is. However, once it does, power amplifiers are going to probably triple in power, too. 100wrms / channel HUs could become the norm. 2000 watts is going to be like 600 watts nowadays. It's just going to get so easy to overpower a system with 36 volts.

I read in a mechanical engineering magazine that they hope to change it all within the next decade to 42 volts. This is for the more computerized vehicles of the future, with everything being ran with the brain box, it is gonna need more juice, plus, they are talking about running crap on the engines with electric motors, in example, the valves. So this is just because of how computerized vehicles are getting is my understanding of the article.

It's 12/14 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif I don't recall any vehicle having a 16 volt alternator stock //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
maby he was thinking of a 16V battery //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

Math error, I forgot it was a 6/7 ratio for battery / alternator.

last I knew of there was talkin about having a 24 or 26V system along with lightinening the vehicle like audio has done wih the new obd3 fully digital (maltiplexed system). Also along with changing over the charging systems to a higher charging systems things like valves will be taken out of the engine and will be replaced with actualtors that will be controled by the computer so gas millage and performance will go up but just think of the fun people will have if the computer goes or the actuators die.

i have heard up to 48v chrysler 42 volt gm and ford i think was leaning to the 48v. it was on speed channel at the detroit car show last year. (i might be wrong on the voltages cause im old and feable) but some of the stuff they are doing is plain nuts. i dont know if id want a huge system to mess with in that type of a set up namely due to the steering and suspensions being electronic as well as the brakes-talking full on totally electronic no hydrolics!!! im sure things will be stablized but im not so sure how things will pan out.

Ther going to go to a higher volt charging systems because the new cars will be **** neer all electrical and by increasing the voltage you will be able to drop in wire size and that is the overall goal of this. if you have a 12 volt system pulling 10 amps you will need a larger wire that a 42 volt system pulling the same amp's. this way they can reduce the amount of wire clutter or "space used" and also save some money will there at it. dont worry its not just to piss off us audio folks //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif

I doubt everything will be electronic, or at the very least there will be hydraulic/mechanical back-up systems for critical things like brakes, throttle control, etc...much like the redundancy found in "glass cockpit" aircraft - vacuum and hydraulic gauges are always included next to the LCD panels.

But since I probably won't buy a new car for another 15 years, I don't plan on dealing with it anytime soon //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif
