Capitalized on Lenovo Deal

So I needed a laptop for college, and I capitalized on the 40% Lenovo deal.

14.1 R61:

2.4 Ghz Intel Dual Core

4GB of Corsair Ram (got from Newegg)

160GB HD

Webcam

Integrated Intel Graphics

6-Cell Battery

I have Vista 64 Ultimate and Office Ultimate ready to put on it too.

I'm excited. My computer right now is a 1.9Ghz Single Core P4 with 512mb ram (Thinkpad A31), so I'm excited to upgrade.

Going to be so much faster! No more slow shit!

Nice nice //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Lenovo makes greata laptops. It's too bad it has Intel integrated graphics //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif But if you don't do any gaming or 3D design, you'll be fine.

Do you mind if I ask how much you paid?

820, that includes all taxes, and shipping.

I wont be doing any gaming or 3D design. I have my xbox for games.

Just remember, with the laptops, the first thing you want to do is set the hard drive to advanced performance mode.

Start > Right-Click Computer > Manage > Disk Management > Right-Click Disk 0 > Properties > Policies > ...

It really helps out w/ laptops because of their relatively slow hard drive performance compared to desktop hard drives and, since the laptop has a battery, you don't have to worry about data loss or corruption due to power loss.

Also, obviously, turn of UAC as it will annoy the living shit out of you.

Start > Control Panel > User Accounts and Family Safety > User Accounts > Turn User Account Control On or Off > Uncheck the box > OK > Restart.

Also, make sure you have Service Pack 1 installed if you don't already have it installed.

I also recommend reducing the service kill time on shut downs.

Start > Regedit > ...

WaitToKill.jpg

Drop it down from 20000 (20 seconds) to 5000-10000 (5-10 seconds). It'll reduce your shut down time significantly if you have a lot of programs running in the background.

One last thing that I recommend is to set the power buttons (physical and start menu) to actually shut the computer down instead of putting it to sleep.

Start > Type Power Options and hit Enter > Set to Balanced > Click Change Plan Settings under Balanced > Change Advanced Settings > Power Buttons and Lid > Set Power Button Action and Start Menu Power Button Action to Shut Down > Click OK

There are many other tweaks out there for Vista, but these are the ones I find make the most impact with no drawbacks.

I love my Lenovo, but definitely why not a T61 instead?
I looked at it, but it didn't seem like much of a difference. I still would have got the same stuff, but it was more expensive by about 150. My parents are buying it, so, well theirs your answer.

Thanks for the vista tips too!

edit:

the advance hard drive thing. When I turn the computer off, do I lose the memory? It says If the power goes out then I'll lose stuff. But will it still happen if i tell it to turn off?

only if the pc crashes, turning it off normally will give it time to backup any data it is writing at the time

i am gonna guess and say the "advanced perfomance" mode just uses a smaller buffer/cache thus a hard crash could possibly lose info
