vB is far from free. Although once you have your license you're good to go. Unless he's paying someone else to maintain the site's software there should be close to zero cost there, and judging from the abundance of random errors here and there I assume he does it all himself.

For a large forum it'll be well over $10 a month for hosting. I was a member of a forum that was very large that had 4 dedicated servers before it hit its prime; wouldn't surprise me if it's running on 10 now. And the word dedicated usually comes with a pretty hefty price tag.
