well, you could buy an external amp to mount into the sub box if you home audio reciever has non amped sub out.

Fair enough. It won't automatically blow up your receiver. Keep am eye on it. If you're cranking it at a party just make sure you keep checking on it for the first party or two.

the amp goes into protect when i hit about 3/4 volume

i've been googling for the transformers but all i get is a bunch of mic ones.

You could always take the DIY approach and make your own. It might be easier for you to just find a new driver though.
